The Perils of High Altitude Driving

Although it can be very enjoyable and therapeutic to take a trip driving through the mountains at high altitude . . . not to mention the incredible views . . . there are one or two things you need to remember. The altitude has an enormous effect on the way that an engine produces its power; it’s all down to the amount of oxygen which is present in the air (or more accurately, the lack of it). Just as people and animals can suffer from altitude sickness, so can anything with an engine. This means cars, snow-blowers, motorcycles, model planes . . . basically everything which relies upon a motor for its power.

Driving through the mountains

If you were to drive to incredibly high altitudes it could stop all motors from working completely, but in most cases all it takes is a quick tune-up and a little bit of preparation to have your motor running as sweetly as it does at lower altitudes.
Some cars can cope with different altitudes better than others, and it may be that you hardly notice any difference in the performance of the engine at all. Small altitude changes will probably not affect performance at all . . . well, not so that you notice, but if you drive from say 6,000 feet to more than 12,000 feet in a short space of time then you will probably notice a large difference in performance.
If you will be driving through high altitudes on vacation it could help to use something like a superior quality gasoline or some sort of octane booster. You may also need to run a quantity of fuel injection cleaner through the system once you return to more normal altitudes. This will help to clean out any residue which may have been causing your engine to run less efficiently.
Driving in high altitudes may create other problems too. When driving it is usually quite a gradual process as you get higher and higher which gives the body plenty of time to adjust to the reduced amount of oxygen in the air, but this could make the driver or passengers suffer with some signs of altitude sickness.

NissanRL-1-2

Higher altitudes generally also mean increased wind and cooler temperatures. Make sure that your power steering is nice and tight and that there is no looseness in the front end of the suspension. All of this can make a big difference to handling in extreme winds.
Using lighter motor oil can also help when driving in severe cold weather. This will not thicken up quite so much when the temperatures plummet. It may even be necessary to use engine heaters during the most severe conditions.
Make sure that all of the fluids are topped up in your car for the maximum efficiency and drivability. This includes power steering fluid and clutch fluid – it can become difficult if not impossible to shift gears in extreme cold temperatures. You must also remember to have good quality anti-freeze in the radiator and the windshield washing fluid.

NissanRL-1-3

If your car is well maintained then it should not cause too many problems but cars with “niggles” will be magnified if you try to drive at high altitudes than when you are at lower, warmer locations.
At Nissan Corona they’ve got a great range of motors which will behave perfectly on a high altitude road trip. If you are heading up higher and higher on your vacation don’t be put off but do bear in mind these tips. If your car isn’t up to it then take a look at http://metronissanredlands.com, they’ve got plenty to choose from.

1989 Honda CRX – Well, Why Not?

CARPHOTO-4041

The purpose of the build may seem confusing to many, at least on top. Perhaps that has something to do with the truth that there really was no true purpose. The idea developed during a conversation with a friend. If not a huge number of hours custom fabricating, caleb Lesher from CrescentCalifornia and City, saw the project as the opportunity to spend hundreds. Although one goal in the build was to produce a dragstrip-ready vehicle, Caleb’s personal satisfaction and enjoyment he receives from the mere act of fabricating nothing into something guided the CRX toward its completion. “I enjoy cutting, welding, and designing, not just bolting stuff together,” he adds. To put it briefly, the journey to completion was far more important than the result-although we’re pretty pumped about the end result!

The original ’89 HF is now a turbocharged, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive car that produces over 470 hp and 356 lb-ft torque on 116-octane leaded. Take a moment, look over a number of the photos, then wrap your head around the very idea that this enthusiast built this car in his garage, and besides it run, it runs like a bat out of hell! A basic B18C block and B16 head with an Integra LS transmission make up the foundation of the heart. The key power contributor is of course the turbo; a Garrett Racing GT3582r, to be exact. The bottom end is semi-built using Darton sleeves, OEM pistons, and Eagle H-beam connecting rods. The exhaust system is lower than four feet with the exhaust dump tube within a foot of the driver seat. “My first impressions of driving the car reminded me of any loud, angry death trap. I just about crapped my pants the first timeintake and turbo system are designed to produce low air temperatures for reliability and longevity. Caleb states that the air intake temperature stays below 140 degrees even after several runs across the dragstrip. A Frozen boost liquid intercooling system powered by a 12-volt fish tank pump helps to keep temperatures down. Once I discovered how effective the intercooler was, I picked not to run it.?, although “I originally bought a methanol and water injection system?

The distinctiveness of this CRX does not correlate to the total build cost. The completed machine totals around $4,000, despite being one of the most custom-built CRXs on the streets. Although pricing was kept to a minimum because of the fact that many of the work was done at home, Caleb uses a cost-benefit analysis when choosing parts. There are some areas where costs are secondary in importance; things such as the bottomend and suspension, and engine management. “However, I feel that a lot of time lower-grade parts can be every bit as good as more expensive things with regards to functionally-just less bling factor,” he explains.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was the big volume of tasks and projects. Some systems would have to be in place and working before others can even begin. This part could not be installed until this weld was completed, etc. Not surprising, frustration peaked throughout the build. Once “I learned to pay attention to one small task at the same time instead of being overwhelmed by the whole thing at!created the wiring harness used for this application, and therefore, several weeks were devoted to researching wiring schematics, wire color definitions, and pinouts before beginning the process. “Once I started cutting and splicing wires, the process went relatively quick.” A pattern started to form. Wires were an electrical power, a ground, or a signal, and interestingly enough, the engine turned over on its very first attempt. This is an impressive victory considering it was his first attempt in a wiring harness. That is, until you look at the overall build and realize that Caleb has all the ability on the planet to troubleshoot and make adjustments when needed.

So that you can accommodate an engine instead of storage space, the CRX must be completely redesigned. Throughout this portion of the build, one error could have potentially scrapped the entire build. “I tapped, shimmed, and measured for hours prior to making the few first welds.” He experimented with various spring rates, shock rates, caster, camber, and toe settings to get the combination and setup he desired. The fabrication and welding were performed by using a hand grinder, reciprocating saw, and a borrowed metal inert gas welder. Presumably as it drove in the straight line without issue, caleb was pleased with himself the first time the Rex hit the pavement.

In closing, Caleb would like to comment that he never had formal automotive training, nor did he possess any fancy, high-dollar equipment at his disposal. With his starting the Honda learning curve much down the road than most, people thought he was crazy for trying the build along with his limited knowledge and resources. Regardless, he pushed forward, and there’s a personal satisfaction to every one of the madness. “Doing something totally crazy and watching people’s jaw hit the floor is actually a hard feeling to beat.” Caleb might try to build an all-wheel-drive Integra or perhaps a Glasair Super II kit built airplane. Who knows? Caleb doesn’t need rationale to steer the next adventure, but one thing is for sure, there will be more adventures.lines and fittingscontrols

1991 Honda CRX HF – Down Since, Day One

CARPHOTO-4021

Within the last 20-plus years, the Honda performance envelope has been pushed with a vengeance, sending our community into unchartered waters. But if there’s one specific area which includes garnered one of the most attention, both good and bad, it’s unquestionably the art of engine swaps. Like large, metallic Legos, every bit of Honda’s unintended modular creations has been tampered mixed, matched and with, and utilized in ways Honda execs could never possibly envision. The almost limitless options have kept many long-term fans interested as well as garnering new enthusiasts.

Jimmy Nguyen is not any stranger to engine swaps in search of improved performance. His first dive into Honda waters was an automatic ’98 Civic coupe that he not surprisingly grew tired of, and made a decision to swap a five-speed B18C5. It was his first time behind the wheel without the assistance of an automatic slushbox, and admittedly, he wasn’t exactly an all natural. I purchased a ticket the first day it was actually swapped to five-speed because I was still learning how to drive a manual he explains. I burned rubber when taking off after i was on my small way to work, and a cop pulled me over for exhibition of speed! One which he chalked up to a taste of bad luck, despite the fact that No doubt a sour experience. His next project was a little more complex. A ’92 Integra served as the foundation, while the powerplant consisted of a B20 block and a VTEC head. Not long after the swap, another bout with bad luck came in the form of a fender bender. The followingI found myself out of building cars for five years, until I was in LittleRock and Arkansas, where I was working. Wasn’t looking for anything in particular, just something cheap to daily drive, even though i started considering a car to acquire. I came across a red CRX in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and made the drive down there to check it out. What Jimmy found was a somewhat stock CRX armed only with a mini-me VTEC swap plus a cherry bomb muffler. An intensive once-over and, with the body in good shape, a deal was struck. Between the time he’d first began looking for a daily driver and also the time that he or she actually purchased the CRX, Jimmy had already compiled a parts list for his new car. I knew what was going to be completed to the CRX. I drove it around stock for maybe a month or so as i was in Little Rock.

Relocating back to his, Jimmy and California friend Phirun wasted little time and completely stripped the car to some bare shell. Late-night stints of tracking down and ordering parts became a regular occurrence as Jimmy’s wish list grew smaller and smaller. He adds, I found an EF8 bumper, rear foglight garnish, and 16v wing on Craigslist. Then I ordered EF8 headlights and doors from N1 Concepts. I would be on eBay and Craigslist searching for parts at all times.

With a lot of the exterior parts in his possession, Jimmy began on the bodywork himself. He sanded and straightened our bodies to the very best of his ability before the car underwent a complete color switch to Ibis White from an Audi. After the paint, I focused on the motor. I needed a buddy who was parting out his ’94 Prelude, so I bought the H22A1 long-block from him. I ended up ordering most of their catalog during those times.””, though i contacted QSD for an H2B kit””In the H side, the engine was fitted with Type S pistons and ARP head studs with a Supertech-equipped head and Blox B cams adjusted by AEM adjustable gears. On the cold end you’ll find 52mm TWM individual throttle bodies, while on the opposite end is really a High End H2B header and custom 2.5-inch exhaust system.

About the B side sits a JDM B16 Integra and transmission axles. The CRX engine bay isn’t the largest in whatever way, and with the sheer size of the H series, one might assume that a cluttered, overcrowded bay is to be expected. Jimmy wanted a well-balanced car that looks every bit as great as it drives. He adds, When it came time for wiring, me and my teammate did the wire tuck, then the brake line tuck. Then my and me pops dropped the motor in the chassis, and I took the car to West Lane Muffler and Performance for tuning. The combination netted an impressive 257 hp with 170 lb-ft torque. Perhaps more important is always that the close gears of the B series trans make certain that power is rarely far away.

Using the added grunt of the H-series mill, the factory HF brakes wouldn’t stand an opportunity. To cancel out the newfound power, a complete Integra caliper and rotor swap was in order, along with Hawk pads. Spotless Sprint Hart CPR wheels wrapped in Falken Azenis complete the classic white-on-white look.

Jimmy certainly isn’t the first to come up with the big engine, little car scenario; decades of hot rodding make sure of that. What he has done however, is taken an original approach in building his CRX, incorporating a classic look with a massive leap forward in performance.

These Shoes Were Made For Driving . . .

Finding the right driving shoes isn’t all about looking good (although there are some pretty stylish pairs about if you know where to look) . . . it’s actually more about comfort and safety.
If you drive while wearing the wrong sorts of shoes it can have all kinds of implications on your driving, your safety and the safety of others.
Rather alarmingly, a large percentage of people have admitted to driving in shoes which were unsuitable. In some cases this may have caused them to drive in a dangerous fashion, in others it may have even been the cause of accidents.

OCFIAT1-1

Your feet are very important and extremely busy while driving. They are constantly pressing and releasing the pedals which can all start to take its toll on the ankles and feet. If you are wearing the right sort of shoes your feet will be comfortable which will help you to feel more relaxed which in turn improves the control you have over the car. It also means that you can react faster to changing situations in the road conditions or the traffic around you . . . wearing the right sort of driving shoes can actually help you to become a smoother driver.
The key features of good driving shoes are the heels and the soles.
Soles – if your shoes have thick soles it prevents you from feeling the pedal properly which can make it difficult to know how much pressure you are exerting onto it. This can make braking and accelerating very jumpy and jerky, be uncomfortable for passengers, cause undue wear and tear onto your car and be potentially dangerous if you have to react quickly. Your driving shoes should have soles which are no more than 1 cm thick although even thinner than that is better. Try driving in a pair of shoes with a very thin sole and you’ll soon feel the difference.

OCFIAT1-2

You’ve also got to avoid shoes with extra wide soles. This could cause you to accidentally press both pedals at the same time which can cause all sorts of problems.
Now let’s focus on the heels. High heels are a definite “”no-no””. In order to achieve the right sort of pedal action, the heel of the foot needs to be firmly placed on the floor. When you wear high heels this elevates the heel with distorts your ability to know exactly how much pressure should be applied. High heels are bad but platforms and wedges are even worse – they’ve got double the trouble with thick soles and high heels as well.
Flip Flops are also a really bad idea when it comes to driving. They can fall off so easily that they can become lodged between the floor and the pedal which is very distracting for the driver and can lead to accidents.
So what are the alternatives?
Moccasin type driving shoes might not exactly match your outfit but there are some super stylish ones available too. They’ve got super flexible, thin soles and are extremely comfortable with little or no heel at all . . . the perfect combination.

OCFIAT1-3

It’s a good idea to carry a pair of driving shoes along with you at all times, then it really doesn’t matter what you are wearing. It’s really easy to slip out of your “fashion” shoes and into your comfortable driving shoes as you get in and out of the car and can make a big difference to your safety and comfort.
At fiat orange county they’ve got a great selection of pre-used and new cars for sale, just waiting for you to take a test drive. Check them out at http://www.ocfiat.com and don’t forget your driving shoes.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 – First Drive

CARPHOTO-4001

When the Mercedes-Benz spokesman confirmed they believed the new 2014 S-Class was the best car in the world, I couldn’t help but shudder slightly. Mainly because our idea of exactly what makes a car “best” isn’t always the same as the standard driver, that sort of statement often results in disappointment. But more importantly, could this four-door sedan meet the hype?

First impressions of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 are positive. The new W222 is handsome and slightly understated, even though it might not be as distinctive because the slightly challenging previous W221 model. It alsoRobert Lesnik, who was enjoying what he referred to as the best job in the world because he had a wide portfolio of projects to be effective on, stating the difference between your new CLA and S-Class as proof, we had the chance to speak to the exterior design chief.

He also pointed out that Mercedes is the only car company in the world with two grilles – one with the three-pointed star around the hood, along with the other together with the large star in the grille. And while the brand new E-Class gets both options, he felt the more refined S should receive the classic grille treatment.

Interestingly, this became Robert’s first assignment at Mercedes, his design being selected 90 days after he joined the corporation in 2009, giving him another four years to generate the production version.

“This car is all about proportion,” he stated. “We wanted the specifics to be seen close up as opposed to from afar, so the defined wheel arches have gone however it has the classic long hood and rearward cabin of your RWD car.”

“After the A-Class and CLA designs, people were worried about how the S-Class would look,” he continued, “but many people have fewer expectations of the smaller cars, therefore we could push the envelope further. Whereas there have been six generations of S-Class so that we needed to be more evolutionary. We worked challenging the proportions right and hide the very fact it’s slightly longer than the earlier model. In reality, everything is built around the rear seat passengers for legroom, headroom, audio, etc. Several of these cars are chauffeur driven so we found it necessary toThe brand new S-Class undoubtedly has presence, as testified by the amount of motorists scampering out of our way while we barreled down upon them. And yet the cabin remains serene in all but fast corners.

It’s claimed to be almost 220 lb lighter and 50% stiffer than before, although the weight of your 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 is presently undisclosed. Yet it’s no featherweight. Even in Sport mode, the car leans into turns. Which is a shame because the 449hp V8 biturbo gets you moving along nicely, it remains relatively flat nevertheless, you sense the mass moving below you.

Slow down, select Comfort, as well as the Merc regains its composure. In fact, Mercedes has given it Magic Body Control, which frankly sounded rather silly until it was properly demonstrated: approaching a speed bump at respectable speed, the car’s stereoscopic cameras (first observed in the 2014 E-Class) browse the road, view the obstacle and discreetly enhance the front suspension in anticipation. If it were, well… magic, the car then glides over the hump as. It describes the effect perfectly since you feel absolutely nothing.

2014 mercedes benz S500 center console

2014 mercedes benz S500 interior

The car has sensors like we use our ears and eyes. This new generation flagship deploys ultrasound, radar, infrared and its dual cameras to create a 360? picture of the surroundings. It can distinguish between animals and humans, even at night. It might read the road surface and adjust the air suspension since we mentioned, and also detect approaching traffic and take steps to prevent an accident if needed.

Steering assistance goes to another level. The electrical system (there’s a nice weight to it, by the way) doesn’t only exist to park the auto for you… It will gently nudge one to keep the car safely within lane demarcations. If you ignore it and so are veering into oncoming traffic, the brakes are applied on one side to return the automobile to its correct lane. It doesn’t actually say: “I can’t let you accomplish that, Dave.” But the degree ofBy offering the first glimpse of autonomous driving, the engineers have taken it a stage further. Although regulations don’t allow this inside the pure sense, the cruise control on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 are now able to follow a car or stay in a lane at a pre-determined speed and distance, while steering through turns itself. There are some safeguards to ensure the driver is giving regular inputs but we experienced the lowest-speed corner taken behind another car and coming to a halt without any input from the driver. Regarded as a safety device, it appears to be to provide the opportunity for the driver to occupy himself with many other tasks, but it’s a glimpse for the future.

The brand new 2014 S-Class is all about soothing its occupants, relieving them of the drudgery of congested driving. It can do so by utilizing more than 20 interacting systems that include parking assistance, blind spot monitoring, night vision, intelligent cruise control and intelligent headlights. Add to that a Burmester music system and you have an incredible long distance cruiser. These aren’t the S550’s greatest trick, however.

Navigating the onscreen menu, you can instruct the infinitely adjustable seats to provide you with a hot stone massage, altering the location and pressure to suit your aches. There’s also a scent diffuser in the glovebox that wafts your selected scent over a gentle breeze of ionized air, making aTherefore, not a single bulb is deployed in the new S, though it should be no surprise that you can also select the color and concentration of electric light. It houses 500 LEDs that, needless to say, last longer and require less energy.

In case the right option boxes are checked, the double-glazed cocoon brings 43.5? reclining rear seats like those who work in the first class cabin by using an airplane. They could similarly massage, heat or cool you together with, in our car, were trimmed in a “quilted” leather. It was actually diamond-shaped perforations as an alternative to full quilting but the effect was appreciated.

And Benz claims the functional and elegant cabin is virtually hand-built. Where faux is actually a no-no, it uses real leather, metals and wood throughout. It’s library-quiet and aerodynamically efficient due to a drag coefficient of .24, which beats a nicely-known Japanese hybrid.

Trunk capacity of 18cuft gives the 2014 S-Class an advantage over the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series, yet it doesn’t look awkward in proportion, even about the long wheelbase versions that can be standard in america.

As the best-selling car in the sector, along with 20,000 advance orders, it looks just as if the 2014 S-Class is guaranteed success. And there’s an AWD 4Matic version around the corner, including a V6 hybrid model to go by.

Since the demise of the ultra-luxurious Maybach brand, the S-Class is left to fill the rather small void, with rumors of the model along the lines of an S600 Pullman waiting in the wings. And while Europe will get a few other engine options, including a thrifty diesel hybrid, all models will be more efficient than the outgoing ones. Pricing is also anticipated to be next to the outgoing models.

So is this the best car in the world? Rolls Royce might claim more luxury, BMW might be more sporting, but nobody appears to have more technology. The 2014 S-Class may be the safest car worldwide, and for many people that would ensure it is the best…

2000 Honda Civic Si – Never Finished

CARPHOTO-3981

True car enthusiasts are painfully transparent. Recognized as creatures of habit, even after calling it quits, the creative juices never really stop flowing. Whether it’s a case of maximum boredom or maybe the unfortunate loss of a project car, the urge to construct is a constant threat. Similar to a bad poker player, they’re far too easily readable, although funny thing is, they’ll let you know with a straight face that they’re done, they’re moving on and never looking back. Innocent stock cars are quickly scanned down and up, then mentally picked apart and rebuilt almost systematically. Sure, true enthusiasts may take a break, nevertheless they never completely escape.

Travis Lippert is an enthusiast who lost his original Si to Nature. A storm that caused flooding in my area caught my Si, and it was totaled. I stumbled upon this car, and it just started off as a daily driver. Content with just possessing a sporty coupe for his daily commute, Travis avoided any mods for almost a complete year before thoughts of the turbo setup began clouding his better judgment. After researching online, he’d found enough positive feedback on Full Race’s turbo kit to take the plunge and purchase certainly one of his own. After installing the kit on which was basically a stock engine, he ran into an issue using the block. Out came the engine in return for a new one, and only three weeks later, he experienced the same problem. Wanting to break the cycle, Travis contacted InlinePro at the advice of the friend. I talked with them for slightly, and the following day I crafted a trip up there to drop off an LS block (B16 head). Just three weeks later, everything was willing to be found and put back together again. I contacted my friend Duong, who’s been there every step of the way with all the car since i have first started modding it, and we discussed doing a wire tuck. The following day I was within his garage and that he was finishing the tuck. I kept changing little things constantly.””, even though car was pretty much done””to somebody and pretty much letting them know to whale on it! I sat there like a father waiting for his first born to come in to the world. I sat out back, nervous, just playing them do pull after pull. The wait was well worth it, as being the InlinePro crew pulled over 460 whp in a mere 11 psi. Pushing the improve to 15 psi led to over 500 whp though that came at the price of traction, because the car began to spin the tires around the dyno. Together with the car tuned and ready to abuse, Travis admits to having an incredible ride back home. I’ve never been so happy to drive it home. I didn’t even turn the radio on one bit, I just listened to the sound of the motor as well as the turbo spooling up for 2.5 hours with the biggest shit-eatin’ grin on my face!

To get the exterior of the Si up to par with its ferocious powerplant, Travis jumped internet and started his hunt for new parts. If I would sell them. To complement the brilliant yellow Kevlar thread, a call was made to Sage Auto, which sourced a Backyard Special bumper with its infamous Kevlar lip, I came across the rarest of rare parts, a matching Kevlar hood and trunk–the only ones I’ve seen and I’ve received plenty of emails/PMs about the forums about where I purchased them and. Having been through a number of CE28s in various sizes and colours, Travis eventually decided on a set of CCW Classics, and was content. Which is, until he was chatting with Dan of CCW who mentioned a whole new design was on the way at that time which led Travis to put the Classics up for sale immediately, making room for the brand-new pair of LM16s. He adds, After throwing the wheels in the car the first time, I knew they were meant to be there. As you won’t find many cars in Honda Tuning Magazine sporting the reduced-offset style, Travis’ EM1 is surely an exception. The main reason being, after swapping the front wheels for some 22-inch slicks, he blasted a 10.96! Soon after, he was kindly asked by track officials to shut his car down, and his track days were put on hold until he decides to add a cage to meet tech requirements.

In closing, he adds, I stepped back and looked at what I’ve built, and it’s even better than I had dreamed in my head. I got the car to look and sit the way I wanted. Oh, which nice little 10-second timeslip doesn’t hurt either. Travis Lippert never really left, although he may took a hiatus from the building process. The truth is, he’s just getting started.

1995 Mazda RX-7 (FD3S) – Red Rum RX-7

CARPHOTO-3961

Tuning an RX-7 is akin to modding your Radio controlled drift automobile. There is just a lot out there you are practically ruined for decision. Nevertheless, when Pro Shop Fukuoh made the decision to accept the total Time Invasion thing really, replicating what others got in the past carried out was merely from the greeting cards. They desired a car that executed effectively and also stood out in the paddock loaded with demo autos. Easier said than done! You will discover, even so, that Tani Fukuoh completed his target instead nicely–at the same time developing some of the most special FD3S aero elements available.

With Suzuka Circuit merely a stone’s dispose of it’s not surprising that almost every tuning store in the Mie-ken place has grown to be committed to keep track of racing. After Some Time Strike almost certainly as fashionable as it’s been, customers who take advantage of the saturday and sunday adventure on the path want nicely-categorized vehicles, a great deal of tuning elements choices, and bulletproof dependability. It’s pushed garages like Master Go shopping Fukuoh to strive for excellence and also this fire-reddish colored FD will be the combination of all their experience. It’s a magnificently assembled vehicle, boasting the sort of awareness of details that could shame far more well-known stores into the unwanted weeds. It’s really obvious that Fukuoh-san is the sort of man who enjoys to do things nicely or certainly not.

When Fukuoh-san handled this task, he started using the chassis. The donor FD was an unmolested but well second hand car, set underneath the blade within the enormous Fukuoh work shop which also doubles up as a very capable body shop.
